“Put the music on!” Noelle said to Tania in a panic. “Something romantic. Sinatra. Harry Connick Jr. Anything to fill the silence!”

Noelle dashed around Magpie pushing in chairs and adjusting the vases of flowers on the tables. It was just after Magpie had closed for the day. Finally, it was time for the final tasting with the whole Clarke clan. Noelle was feeling jittery for a thousand reasons that went well beyond bourbon buttercream and double chocolate.

The news was officially out about the baby, and it was the first time Noelle and Edith would be in the same room to talk about it. She and Jett had made it Facebook official shortly after the engagement hubbub died down.

Noelle caught sight of her reflection and smoothed the front of her blue and black striped apron over a crisp white blouse. The bump wasn’t obvious unless you looked for it. She hoped Edith’s inquisition would be over quickly so they could focus on the cake that would eventually help to skyrocket her business. Plus, she had Jett’s part of their arrangement to worry about. With Harold a captive in her shop and under her cakes’ spell, she hoped she could find a moment to sell the dam project to him.

The Clarkes pulled up in front of the shop in tandem. Harold, Edith and their other daughter, Kendra, in a massive ivory Escalade, and Lynn and Michael in a spotless black Denali with tinted windows.

“Tania, they’re here! Are you ready?”

“So ready,” she replied with a salute. “You got this, boss. I’m going in back to plate everything. Holler if you need me.”

Lynn and Michael walked in first, all smiles and hugs for Noelle.

“I’ve been starving myself all day,” Michael said, patting his belly with a laugh. “I’m ready for some cake!”

“Watch out, this guy will devour every bite,” Lynn said, gesturing to her fiancé.

“You already look like a bride,” Noelle gushed to Lynn, who was wearing a chic cream sheath dress with a pale pink cardigan draped on her shoulders.

“And you already look like a beautiful momma,” Lynn said quietly, nodding at Noelle’s stomach. “That might be the cutest little bump I’ve ever seen!”

“Oh, thanks.” Noelle blushed and ran her hand over it. “But can we not talk about it too much tonight? This is about the two of you, not me.” The reality was that Noelle didn’t want to deal with Edith trying to figure out her conception timeline.

“Trust me, I understand.” Lynn gave her a meaningful look. “I won’t let her get started.”

The door opened with a clatter and Edith stepped into the shop like she was walking onto a runway. Harold ducked away to talk with Michael, apparently overwhelmed by the feminine energy in the room. He looked as aloof as always in his navy blazer and white swoop of hair. Noelle tried to catch his eye to smile at him, but Harold seemed fixated on Michael.

“Sweetheart,” Edith said to Noelle, opening her arms. “What blessed news you have! Come here.
